Consistency
It has always been hard, especially since becoming a parent, to stay consistent with writing.
It usually happens in bursts. I get jazzed up. Somehow I churn out thousands of words in a relatively short amount of time. (That’s what it feels like happens, anyway.)
I’m writing the first draft of a new middle grade book right now, with the intention to actually query agents for traditional publishing. I think it’s a strong, fun idea, and I’m pretty excited about it! And to keep that excitement going I’ve been trying to stay consistent about when I write.
It’s been about a week and a half of getting up early: somewhere between 4:45 and 5:30. With both kids figuring out that sleeping in is actually great, that can give me around an hour to an hour and a half before I have to start getting ready for work.
This morning I wrote a little over 250 words, finishing the second chapter of the middle grade book, and giving me 3,500 words total for the book so far.
250 words you say! That’s not really a lot! To that I say, “you are correct.”
However! I think what I’ve finally learned over years of writing…starting and stopping…the exhausting flip flop between never being able to see the finish line and then sprinting toward the finish line…is that just a little progress each day is good AND it’s good enough. Consistency gives momentum and momentum is everything.
Consistency is also what I’m going to try and do with this website. I know it’s important for authors to get themselves out there and I’m trying to get better at it. So stay tuned here for updates, schemes, and when the heist is going down. It is my intention to post here at least once a week, definitely on Friday mornings.
